B-24J “Shootin’ Star” of US 14th Air Force, 308th Bomb Group, 374th Bomb Squadron. Missing Air Crew Report #11163 says, “Plane 42-73249 departed Luliang, China, at 1030 hours, 12 January 1945, on long range reconnaissance mission to South China Sea and Indo-China coast. No further contact since take-off.” 10 KIA. Marine Corsair pilots flying from USS Essex reported the aircraft initially reported the downed aircraft was an “Emily” (Kawinishi H8K 4-engine flying boat) and that “the plane was unmarked except for camouflage paint and responded to questioning maneuvers and signals with gunfire only.”
