Although it is not known which is which, the 3 battleships to the left are all 3 ships of the Colorado-class (Colorado, Maryland, & West Virginia). The two in the background are both ships of the Pennsylvania-class (Pennsylvania & Arizona). The two on the right are both ships of the Tennessee-class (Tennessee & California). Not shown out of frame to the right are 2 of the 3 New Mexico-class battleships, making a total of 9 battleships anchored around the Navy’s only aircraft carrier at the time – and there were 8 other battleships in commission at the time. 20 years on, by 1946, after the lessons learned in WWII, it was the aircraft carriers that greatly outnumbered battleships.
