The official Navy caption for this photo says the Helena survivors were being debarked from the USS Nicholas. Nicholas did pick up 289 Helena survivors but transferred them to USS Honolulu later that same day at Tulagi. The Helena crewmen came aboard Nicholas covered in oil and transferred to Honolulu with all of their clothes badly oil stained. No boat or barges like the ones seen here were necessary for the transfer. Honolulu then took the men to Espiritu Santo for further transportation.

My Dad was on the ship when it sunk it took him many years to talk about it and I was proud to be his son. He was a real man.
