Several internet sources display this photo identifying the Japanese officers as Captain Masanori Shiga and his aide. Capt Shiga was the area commander for the Japanese forces and did sign the surrender aboard the Levy three days later but the Levy’s War Diaries are clear that these officers were LtCdr Toyda and Lt Hutsu.

My great uncle was a missionary who visited Milli. He was told a story by the locals about an Allied/American? pilot who, essentially, WAS the air raid on a Japanese airfield just before the surrender of the island. His plane was shot by a rifle? and went down on the island. The locals took my uncle to the spot where the plane had crashed and he saw the wreckage. He always wanted to find out more about the pilot. He recently passed away and his widow has recently expressed a wish to continue this quest. They took down some information, including the carburetor number, but did not know who to contact for further information. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction?
