Hornet's berthing location in this photo is where the ship is berthed today as a museum ship, 1 of 4 surviving Essex-class carriers.

This would have been between September 15 1945 when Enterprise arrived from Bremerton after an overhaul driven by a suicide hit in May, and Sep 18 when she and Hornet (CV-12) left for Pearl continuing Magic Carpet operations. Saratoga was also doing Magic Carpet, had arrived from Pearl on Sep 13, left on Sep 19 for Pearl, and would return to Alameda on Sep 30. Enterprise went west one last time on Sep 18, but she then left Pearl direct for the Canal Zone and the East Coast on Sep 25. Hornet had been in San Francisco for overhaul after the June 5 typhoon smashed 24 feet of the forward flight deck and had just come out to Alameda on Sep 13 also preparing to do a Magic Carpet op, underway Sep 18 cycling though Pearl on Sep 23 and returning to Alameda on the 30th. San Jacinto (CVL-30) had returned directly from the western Pacific with many passengers arriving Alameda September 14.
