PIECE OF THE ACTION:
Haleiwa Field, was a secondary air strip outside of Pearl Harbor. During the war, it was improved and used by the U.S. Navy and Army. After the war
it was little used and later abandoned between 1947 to 1961. Later turned over to the State of Hawaii and is now a civilian facility Kalaeloa Airport.
During the Pearl Harbor Attack Dec.7,1941 P-40s flown by Lt Welch and Lt. Taylor took off to intercept attacking Japanese aircraft. During the dogfight, Lt. Welch shot down four Japanese aircraft, and Lt. Taylor shot down two.

Both Lt. Welch and Lt. Taylor were shown taking off from Haleiwa air strip in their P-40s to intercept Japanese aircraft the movie dogfight was well done in the 1970 film Tora, Tora, Tora
