Note the carrier USS Ranger in lower right approaching Ford Island’s Berth F-10 after four days at sea conducting night carrier qualification landings. Ranger logs pinpoint this photo as 5 Sep 1944 at almost precisely 10:00 AM local time.
Note also the overturned USS Utah in Berth F-11 just ahead of Ranger’s berth. The Utah capsized due to damage received in the Dec 7th attack on Pearl Harbor. She remained there throughout the war and she remains there still.
Berths F-13, F-12, and F-9 are occupied by escort carriers that probably had been used to transport aircraft, bringing many of the planes seen in this photo.
The battleship in Berth F-3 on the other side of Ford Island is the USS South Dakota on her way from repairs at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington to the Philippines and the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
