This aircraft was assigned to Lt Wayne O'Connor and many sources list him as the pilot during this crash, including Roger Freeman who certainly is an authority on the USAAF in Britain, but the accident report itself lists the pilot in this crash as Lt Frank Peppers who usually flew P-47D UN-F (42-7893).

This aircraft was assigned to Lt Wayne O'Connor and many sources list him as the pilot during this crash, including Roger Freeman who certainly is an authority on the USAAF in Britain, but the accident report itself lists the pilot in this crash as Lt Frank Peppers who usually flew P-47D UN-F (42-7893).

Failure to remove the rudder lock prior to take-off resulted in 1stLt Wayne O'Connor being unable to maintain directional control of P-47D 42-22534/UN-O, which ended in a boundry hedge at Haleworth. The pilot escaped unhurt but the Thunderbolt was a write-off. This incident occurred on 7 September 1943" As quoted in "56th Fighter Group" by Roger Freeman.
