WAR LOAD: BOMBS, ROCKETS & 2,800 ROUNDS OF AMMO

F4U-1D of VMF-312 Loaded for fighter-bomber close support mission. Fighters were fitted with 2 x pylons under the wings and could take bombs, up to 1,000lbs along with napalm and drop tanks. Aircraft has been armed with zero-length 5-inch rockets. Production of F4U-1D ran to 803 aircraft

CLOSE SUPPORT:

Marine and Navy F4U pilots were known for flying close to give the Marines on the ground to provide the air support they needed, to get the job done. War is a nasty, dirty, rotten business
