The P-43 Lancer and P-47 Thunderbolt were both products of the Republic Aviation Company and, more than that, were each designed by the same designers at Republic. As you said and as this picture shows, clearly they were from the same family of airplanes. These kinds of similarities of design are not uncommon. Many of the Vought airframes show similarities with one another as do several of the Grumman designs.
