FOR THE FATHERLAND:
Looks like Karl is watching out for der Russkies
earlier in the day, the Kommandant awarded him the Iron Cross. Check out the MP40, the bolt is open position and you can see the magazine and 9mm rounds.
ITS NOT A SCHMEISSER!
Often called the Schmeisser, the MP40 was designed by Heinrich Vollmer. Hugo Schmeisser had nothing to do with the design, but his company made the 9mm magazines that had his name stamped on the bottom of each one.
