The Navy’s official caption for this image dates it as 31 Oct 1944 and also says the Langley is at anchor. Langley is not at anchor in this photograph but is underway as evidenced by the ensign flying from the gaff and the presence of a light wake astern. If Langley is underway, then the date of 31 Oct 1944 is wrong because she lay at anchor all day on the 31st rearming, refueling, and replenishing. The far more likely date for this photo is 30 Oct 1944 when Langley arrived at Ulithi. She dropped anchor at 0824 hours, making this the morning sun seen reflecting off the water.
