KI 109 HEAVY FIGHTER: STOP GAP
The Ki-109 was a heavy fighter version of the Mitsubishi Ki-67 Hiryu (Peggy) twin-engine bomber. Facing increased raids on the Empire by USAAF B-29's twenty four Ki-67 bombers were
modified to fill the role of both night and day fighters.
NIGHT NINJA: HUNTER/KILLER
A flight of two Ki 109's would intercept B-29's on
night raids, one was armed with 1 x 75mm cannon w/15 rounds in the nose, for defensive armament 1 x 12.7mm machine gun was mounted in the tail w/600 rounds of ammo.
The other Ki 109 carried a 40cm searchlight and radar for the intercepts. Later the USAAF carried out low-level bombing raids at night.
Both the Japanese Army and Navy modified day fighters both single and twin-engine to fulfill intercept roles.
NINJA:
Derives from the two Japanese characters "nin
and "Ja...meaning to preserve.
