B5M MABEL THE B5N KATES FORGOTTEN PREDECESSOR

Mitsubishi B5M1 Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber, Model 2.
Number 33-305 assigned to 33rd Kokutai that
operated in South China and Hainan 1942.
First flight of the B5M Mabel was 1937 it was designed to carry torpedos or bombs Mabel
was assigned as a carrier-based aircraft, but
operated from land bases, about 145 were built some sources say 170.

Aircraft saw service in Southeast Asia and China, and the early part of the Pacific war
aircraft later withdrawn to second-line units
and served as trainer, glider and target tug
survivors later used for Kamikaze missions.

Mabel was armed with two forward firing 7.7mm
machine guns and 1x7.7mm machine gun mounted
on a flexible mount in rear cockpit.
