Yorktown (CV-10) was commissioned on April 17 1943 at Norfolk and then immediately went into drydock for 12 days, coming out on April 27. This picture shows her first true sailing, underway for compass calibration in the Chesapeake Bay. She has no aircraft on board at this point, her first air operation was on May 6. She would depart for Trinidad and shakedown on May 21 and return to Norfolk June 17. Post shakedown repairs completed on July 1, then depart for the Canal Zone and the Pacific on July 6, in this case going directly to Pearl Harbor after transiting the canal rather than going to San Diego as most Essex class carriers did. She arrived at Pearl at 1432 July 24, 1943. Her first combat was on August 31, 1943 with a set of strikes against Marcus Island in company with Essex, Independence, Indiana, 2 light cruisers, and 10 destroyers.
