How do you account for last person (L-R) wearing captain's bars on hat, if S/SGT?

Thanks, anonymous of 3 Apr 2020. The "left to right" error has been corrected to "right to left".

The co-pilot in this photo is my father. Dad was somewhat reticent about his experiences, but I got him to talk about it a little bit. Some time after this picture was taken, his plane was shot down and he and his crew were rescued by a Chinese junk captained by a man named Au Shu Shin (spelling unsure).
Any info about his crew would be appreciated.
