Watched by Major General Vandegrift (standing behind), Admiral Chester W Nimitz, CinC Pac, took time during his visit to Guadacanal on 30 September, to decorate Lt. Col. Evans C. Carlson, C.O. 2nd Raider Battalion. The other officers in the photograph receiving decorations are (from left): Brigadier-General William H. Rupertus, ADC; Colonel Merritt A. Edson, C.O. 5th Marines; Lt. Col. Edwin A Pollock, C.O. 2nd Battalion ,1st Marines; and Major John L. Smith C.O. VMF-223.
