The Ki-45 Ic Nick was armed with a pair of
obliquely mounted 20mm cannons, and a
37mm cannon. During its production life, both
engines and weapons changed.
The aircraft was very maneuverable for a twin
engine fighter. A rear gunner manned a heavy
machine gun

Japanese pilots flying Kawasaki Ki-45 (Nick)
twin-engine fighter's, would engage B-29's
over the home islands.
Some pilots would ram the Superforts after
running out of ammo. Later a Special Attack
Unit was formed using (Tai-Atrai), or body
crashing, the nick's would be stripped of
armor and weapons.

This one is of the 53 Sentai, a unit specifically formed to counter the B-29s. This dates the picture to some time in 1944 or 1945.
53 Sentai had an additional fourth squadron specialized in ramming attacks against the 29s but this aircraft is from one of the conventional squadrons since its lacking the markings and the enclosed rear canopy of the special attack unit.
Pilots of the conventional squadrons, however, also wouldn't hesitate to go on ramming attacks when necessary.
