Note the destroyer’s torpedo tubes at right and 5-inch/38 caliber ammunition (shells and powder charges) on the barge at left. Nicholas took torpedoes and ammunition from Patterson because Patterson was to withdraw to Espiritu Santo later that same day. Nicholas was replenishing her torpedoes after the night action off Kolombangara the preceding night where torpedoes from Nicholas may well have dealt the crippling blow to Japanese light cruiser Jintsū.
