Note that both men are wearing the short-lived Navy Grays uniform. Chief of Naval Operations Ernest King hated the Khakis and commissioned the Grays as an optional alternative. Nimitz hated the Grays so the Grays were usually only seen around Washington while Khakis were normally seen around the Pacific but both were authorized. Once Nimitz advanced to Chief of Naval Operations post-war, the Grays were dropped.
