The official Navy caption for this image says it was taken “15 Apr 1944, the day of her commissioning” but this is not possible. Hancock’s war diary says she was in dry dock at the time of her commissioning and remained in dry dock for 6 more days. The first time she made any movements where she would have kicked up even the little wake seen here was on 18 May 1944 when she shifted to President Roads in the outer harbor.
