This is an interesting photo in that Spruance and Nimitz are wearing the Navy khaki uniforms while King is wearing the Navy grays. King did not like the khakis and instituted the grays as an alternative. If he would have had his way, the grays would have replaced the khakis altogether but they lacked much support outside King’s own office. Nimitz hated the grays and their use was discouraged throughout his command. While technically both were authorized throughout the Navy, it was unusual to see the grays in the Pacific area and they were only worn in any significant numbers in and around Washington DC where King’s offices were. When Nimitz replaced King as Chief of Naval Operations in Dec 1945, the grays were quickly done away with, officially and forever.
