Photograph of Japanese carrier Akagi taken
at Sukumo bay, April 1939 after her extensive modernization from 1935 to 1938. Akagi was taken out of service and enters dry dock for modernization, at Sasebo Naval Yard.
She had her three flight decks removed, and replaced by one main flight deck running almost the length of the ship her aircraft capacity increased from 61 to 91 aircraft. During WWII she was later lost at the Battle of Midway June 1942.
During the attack on Pearl Harbor her air group was made up of Mitsubishi A6M2 Model 21 Zero "Zeke" Fighters, Aichi D3A1 "Val" Dive Bombers and Nakajima B5N "Kate" Torpedo Bombers.
