ww2dbaseUralmash, short for Uralskiy Mashinostroitelnyy Zavod ("Urals Machine Building Plant"), began operations in 1933. For some years, it was named after Grigoriy Ordzhonikidze, an early associate of Joseph Stalin. Prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Uralmash produced heavy equipment such as blast furnaces, sintering machines, rolling mills, presses, and cranes. In the late 1930s, part of it became known as Artillery Plant No. 9, which produced guns of the 122 mm howitzer M1938 (M-30) design. After the war began, it produced tank hulls, T-34 tanks, SU-122 tank destroyers, SU-85 tank destroyers, and SU-100 tank destroyers. After the war, Uralmash returned to the production of industrial machines, and would later be known for its dragline excavators and drilling rigs. In Dec 1992, it became a open-end joint stock company, and in 1996 it became a part of the OMZ conglomerate.
