ww2dbaseThe original facilities which would later become the Kirov Factory was initially established on 28 Feb 1801 at Sankt Peterburg in northern Russia by the decree of Emperor Paul I for the construction of cannon balls. In 1848, it was purchased by an industrialist by the name of Putilov, who would soon turn the facility into a major producer of rolling stock for railways. Starting in 1900, it began to produce artillery pieces. When the Soviet Union took control of the former Russian Empire, it was the largest industrial establishment of the city. During the inter-war years, operating under the name of Red Putilovite Plant, it produced tractors. In 1934, shortly after the assassination of Sergey Kirov, it was renamed Factory No. 100 named after Sergey Kirov. Beginning in 1940, it produced T-34 tanks. In 1941, due to German threat, some of the equipment were relocated to Central Asia to the large Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant No. 100 complex. The remaining equipment stayed operational during the long and harsh siege of Leningrad, together with Obukhov Factory on the other side of the city. The Kirov Factory remained an important industrial complex long after the war.
