ww2dbaseIn 1889, the firm F. Schichau began constructing floating docks and repair workshop in Pillau, Ostpreußen (English: East Prussia), Germany (now in Baltijsk, Russia) as part of an effort to expand its capabilities to work with the growing German Navy. The yard's first general manager was Carl Heinz Ziese, son-in-law of F. Schichau's founder Ferdinand Schichau; Ziese would later become the chief executive of F. Schichau after the founder's death. During WW2, F. Schichau Pillau provided repair services for submarines, minesweepers, and other military vessels. After the war, the region was taken over by the Soviet Union, which continued to operate the facilities for naval purposes.
