ww2dbaseThe Chenggong Airfield (Postal Map romanization: Chengkung) was constructed starting in Nov 1942, and it began operations on 27 Jan 1943. It was a major terminal for the supply flights between India and China over the eastern Himalaya Mountains, also known as "The Hump", while, after Mar 1943, also served as the base for 374th Bombardment Squadron and 375th Bombardment Squadron, both of which flew B-24 Liberator bombers. In Oct 1943, P-51 Mustang fighters of 76th Fighter Squadron of 23rd Fighter Group and P-40 Warhawk fighters of 16th Fighter Squadron arrived at Chenggong Airfield. The base was closed on 30 Sep 1945 shortly after the end of WW2, and all facilities were demolished over the subsequent years as the city grew, although not all the land had been built over yet.
