ww2dbaseThe French Navy began developing the mouth of the Penfeld River on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the 1600s, and by the 1800s it had become a military port exclusively. During WW1, it served as the main disembarking port for men and supplies arriving from the United States. Several of the French Navy's main warships during the WW2 era, including battleships Richelieu and Dunkerque, were built at Brest during the inter-war years. In 1940, after the German conquest of France, the Germans built a major submarine base at Brest, turning it into one of the key German submarine bases during the Battle of the Atlantic. The Brest Arsenal continued operations after WW2.
