- US Naval Aviation's first combat action began when the base detachment, including three aircraft and three pilots under Lieutenant J. H. Towers, left Pensacola, Florida, United States in the battleship USS Mississippi to assist forces at Vera Cruz, Mexico, where they flew observation and photographic sorties. ww2dbase [AC]
