Malta Conference
Contributor: C. Peter Chen
ww2dbasePrior to President Franklin Roosevelt of the United States and Prime Minister Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom's trip to Yalta in southern Ukraine to meet with Joseph Stalin, the two Western Allies leaders met on the island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. Roosevelt's top civilian and military lieutenants arrived first and met with their British counterparts at the Montgomery House on 30 Jan, discussing, among other things, logistics matters in Western Europe. Roosevelt arrived on 2 Feb and kept his meeting with Churchill as short as possible so that Stalin would not get the impression that the Western Allies were conspiring against the Soviet Union. Indeed, while Roosevelt had plans to woo Stalin in the upcoming Yalta Conference, he agreed with Churchill in that it would be undesirable for both the US and Britain to see Soviet influence growing into the power vacuum that would soon to form as Germany collapsed. Privately, Churchill would note that Roosevelt's health appeared to be fragile.
