Battle of Zhijiang
Contributor: C. Peter Chen
ww2dbaseIn early Apr 1945, 70,000-80,000 Japanese troops organized in seven divisions attacked Zhijiang in western Hunan Province in an attempt to open a way into Sichuan Province which housed China's war time capital Chongqing. The secondary objective of this offensive was to secure airfields and railroads in Hunan. The Chinese responded by transferring two army groups under the command of He Yingqin to defend the region. With support from American and Chinese air forces, the Chinese forces defeated the Japanese by Jun 1945, inflicting 20,000 casualties while suffering 13,000.
