Battle of Zaoyang-Yichang
Contributor: C. Peter Chen
ww2dbaseIn order to set up a position to assault the Chinese war time capital Chongqing, the Japanese needed a strong position in central China from which they could use as a springboard. The Japanese decided that the location would be the town of Yichang in western Hubei Province. On 1 May 1940, four full divisions, two partial divisions, and two independent brigades attacked Yichang under the command of Katsuichiro Enbu with some air cover. The attack force, however, was too small and not well supported in terms of heavy weapons. As a result, General Li Zongren and his Chinese troops repelled the attack by mid-Jun 1940.
