ww2dbaseThe Yak-9 was developed upon the design of the successful Yak-7. The availability of duraluminum gave the Yak-9 aircraft a lighter weight, thus allowing greater configuration possibilities. The first major combat mission Yak-9 fighters participated was the Battle of Stalingrad, and eventually became one of the main fighters of the Russian air force. When production ceased in 1948, 16,769 were built.
