In 1946, two high-tech Japanese submarines were scuttled by the US Navy off Hawaii Islands to prevent the technology from falling in to the hands of the Soviet Union. I-14, one of the submarines sunk, was 400 feet long, had capacity to carry two aircraft, and was capable of circling the globe one and half times. I-201, the other scuttled submarine, was thought to be twice as fast as her contemporaries.

Bob Hackett, a retired US Air Force colonel, is a military historian and a principal contributor at CombinedFleet.com, a partner website of WW2DB. Although not involved with the Feb 2009 findings, he had been a leading researcher in related projects sponsored by National Geographic Channel, which funded in part the Feb 2009 dives that found the submarines. "In their time, [these submarines] were very revolutionary," Bob said in an interview with the newspaper LA Times, as seen in the article 2 Japanese subs sunk after World War II found. "We were quite interested in the technology."
