ww2dbaseLosey Field, named after Captain Robert M. Losey, was established by the US Army Air Corps in 1941 on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, an American colony. It was used by both fighter and bomber squadrons of the US Army during the war. It ceased to be an active airfield in 1944 when the German threat in the western Atlantic was largely eliminated; the last unit to be stationed there was USAAF's 417th Bombardment Squadron of 25th Bombardment Group. In 1950, the US Army renamed it Camp Losey. The base was later transferred to the Puerto Rico National Guard, which at the time of this writing continues to operate the facility for training purposes under the name of Fort Allen.

1 Apr 1941 | 4th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of 13th Composite Wing of 72nd Observation Group of US Army Air Corps was assigned to Losey Field in Puerto Rico. |
15 Nov 1941 | US 22nd and 23rd Fighter Squadrons, both operating P-40 Warhawk fighters, was assigned to Losey Field in Puerto Rico. |
10 May 1942 | 20th Troop Carrier Squadron of US Sixth Air Force Base Command was assigned to Losey Field in Puerto Rico. |
1 Oct 1942 | A USAAF C-39 aircraft took off from Borinquen Field in northwestern Puerto Rico at 0800 hours, landing at Losey Field in southern Puerto Rico at about 0845, picking up additional passengers. It then took off for San Juan, Puerto Rico. En route, weather caused poor visibility, causing aircraft to crash into a mountain in the center of the island northwest of Coamo at between 0915 and 0930 hours. 22 were killed: Captain Francis H. Durant (pilot), Lieutenant James P. Robers (co-pilot), Corporal James M. Conrad (crew), Private Roy A. Alpine (crew), Major Roland Kohr, 1st Lieutenant Lawrence Camp, 1st Lieutenant Donald Bashaw, 2nd Lieutenant George Beach, Captain Jack I. Smith, Captain Raymond C. Stiles, 1st Lieutenant Alexis Voroniesk, 1st Lieutenant Everett F. Johnson, 1st Lieutenant Pascasio Chacon Quinones, Warrant Officer (jg) Allen Brewer, Sergeant Hardy Hocking, Sergeant Thomas F. Burke, Jr., Sergeant Jesse Casarez, Private Irving Hyfer, Boatswains Mate 1st Class John Larimore, Dorothy J. Van Zant, Margarita M. Ortiz, and Marie Tholen. |
29 May 1943 | 417th Bombardment Squadron of 25th Bombardment Group of US Army Air Forces, operating B-18 Bolo bombers, was assigned to Losey Field in Puerto Rico. |
24 Mar 1944 | The control of Losey Field in Puerto Rico, now without any active air units, was turned over to US Army ground forces. |
